One ancestry.com source claims that Jacob Straight’s grandfather came from Wales. Jacob’s father (John Milton Straight) was born in England. He was a captain in the New York Militia Company during the French & Indian wars, also known as King George’s War.

Jacob Straight served as a guard at Fort Frederick in Maryland and died in the service of General Forbes’ Army near Will’s Creek, Maryland in October of 1758. Jacob’s father and wife also died in October of 1758 near Will’s Creek, but it is unclear whether their deaths are related. Fort Frederick was built primarily as a place of refuge for area settlers. Between 1757 and 1758, small raids by Indians in nearby settlements caused settlers to flee to the fort. One internet source citing the history of Bedford County (a Pennsylvania county on the border with Maryland) says that sometime around 1758 a group of Indians made a raid in the section north east of Wills Creek in an area now known as Southampton Township in Bedford County. A number of settlers were massacred and a number of women and children taken prisoner. So it is possible that Jacob and his wife and father were all killed during this attack.

Ironically, it was Jacob’s son Jacob Jr. and daughter Betsy that were killed by an Indian raid on their settlement in Virginia (now West Virginia) on October 3, 1786.
