Hans Engebretsen Morkehaugen Huslokken Imsdalen (Imsdahl)
Born October 14, 1827 in Morkehagen Ringebu Oppland Norway, died in August 11, 1900 in Brooten Minnesota
Father: Engebret Arnesen Morkehagen (1795 - 1858)
Mother: Marit Hansdatter Skrukkerud (1800 - 1872)
Wife: Maret Olsdatter Elstadkleiven (July 22, 1829 - February 5, 1918)
Son: Engebret Hansen Skrukkerudskogem (1853 - )
Son: Ole Hansen Huslokken, born on 3-13-1856 in Ringebu Oppland Norway, died on 12-24-1932 in Brooten, MN
Daughter: Marit Hansdatter Huslokken (1862 - 1956)
Daughter: Mari Hansdatter Huslokken (1859 - 1947)
Son: Hans Hansen Huslokken (1865 - 1955)

Hans married Maret Olsdatter Elstadkleiven in 1853 in Ringebu Norway. They immigrated to Minnesota in 1887 to be with their children who had also immigrated to Minnesota. They and their children took the name Imsdalen (Imsdahl) after immigrating, as was the custom of other Norwegians who came from Imsdalen.

Hans was called Engebretsen because he was the son of Engebret. His third name represented the farm or place where he lived at the time. Morkenhagen is likely the name of the farm in Ringebu where he was born. Hans and Maret were called Huslokken after moving to Imsdalen, which was likely the name of the farm where they lived in Imsdalen at the time. Hans worked as a forester and gamekeeper in Imsdalen from 1867 to 1887. Only their daughter Mari and son Engebret stayed behind in Norway. Mari stayed in Imsdalen and Engebret went to the north of Norway. Some of Engebret's relatives still live to this day in Rognan Norway under the name Skansen.

Hans and Maret are both buried in a small country cemetery south of Brooten Minnesota. The headstone for Hans who died in 1900 says Imsdalen, and the headstone for Maret who died in 1918 says Imsdahl, which means the family changed the spelling of their name from Imsdalen to Imsdahl sometime between 1900 and 1918.

Children of Hans and Maret
The children of Hans and Maret who immigrated to America changed their name to Imsdahl after immigrating.

1) Engebret Hansen Skrukkerudskogem was born in 1853 and is listed in the 1875 census for Ringebu as living and working on the Imsdalen nordre (northern) farm with his parents and siblings.

3) Marit Hansdatter Huslokken (Marit Imsdahl) (1862 - 1956) was the mother of my grandfather, Menvil Peter Imsdahl.

4) Mari Hansdatter Huslokken (July 10, 1859 - February 2, 1947). Mari would have been around age 16 in 1875, the year the Ringebu census shows that Hans Engebretsen and his family were living in Imsdalen. Mari is not listed on that census and so likely would have been married and living at a different residence. She married Matias Johannesen Huset (June 9, 1855 - November 19, 1937). The Huset farm is located in the Imsdalen valley and is a short distance from the Imsdalen nordre (northern) farm that is listed in the 1875 Ringebu census. Thus, while some of her siblings and her parents immigrated to America, Mari stayed in Norway and lived on the Huset farm in the Imsdalen valley. Mari and Matias had 11 children (first cousins to my grandfather Menvil):

1. Hans Matiasen Huset, born 9-4-1880 and died 3-14-1969, is listed in the 1910 Ringebu census as living at the Huset farm in Imsdalen with his family. He married Gunda Simensdatter Mytting (1886 - 1975). They had 7 children (second cousins to my father):

8. Harald Mathiasen Huset (Huse) (October 10, 1895 - December 29, 1969) married Marie Pedersdatter Haugen (May 3, 1897 - December 22, 1965). Harald was a first cousin to my grandfather Menvil Imsdahl.

1 - Kare Huse (January 26, 1933 - August 18, 2017) (Second cousin to my father Montelle). His son Harald Huse (my third cousin) owns the Huset farm that you can see at the end of my Imsdalen video. Harald said that he was up fixing the roof on one of the buildings when we stopped to take video of his farm. We did not know at the time we visited in 2016 that someone from the family still owns the farm.

He married Anna Martinusdatter Sjoli (1865 - 1940) in 1894 in Willmar, MN. They had two children (first cousins to my grandfather):

1. Helga Marie Imsdahl (1898 - 1933).

2. Mayme Martine Imsdahl was born on 3-12-1901 and died on 11-18-1986. She married Vernon Parker Benson (1899 - 1978). One Ancestry.com listing says they had three children (second cousins to my father).

The 1875 census for Ringebu has Hans Engebretsen and his family living on the Imsdalen North farm. His daughter Mari married and raised a family on the Huset farm in Imsdalen. Mari is not listed as living with her parents on the 1875 census because she was 16 or 17 at the time and probably already married and living on the Huset farm, which is a short distance from the Imsdalen North farm.

Hans Hansen Imsdalen left for New York on April 22, 1887.

One year later, the brother of Hans (Ole Hansen Imsdalen) along with his wife and children immigrated on July 20, 1888.
